The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.
The ex-president was sentenced of planning a government overthrow in the ninth month and handed more than 27 years in jail, but he was staying under home detention pending legal challenges.
High Court Judge the presiding justice said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" came to light.
This encompassed trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a call for a public vigil that could "allow for a possible escape.
Court Filing Details Flight Fears
In a paperwork permitting the arrest, the judge said intelligence from the unit overseeing Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's "intention to break the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his escape.
This, it said, would be assisted by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.
His child, his son Flávio, who serves as a senator, called for a gathering of his backers near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.
The senator wrote on online platforms on last Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your country, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your settee? I urge you to fight with us."
He said the vigil would be so followers could "pray for his physical condition and for the return of democracy in our country."
Diplomatic Refuge Fears
Part of the magistrate's determination was the possibility of the former president's move to diplomatic missions near the home, considering that the inquiries revealed a background of planning to seek refuge through a embassy office", a statement said.
The legal document underscores that the United States embassy in the federal district, the capital city, is located around approximately 13 kilometers from his dwelling.
Global Responses
His judicial problems have drawn the ire of fellow right-wing populist United States President Trump, causing him to impose a 50% tariff on imports of Brazilian goods.
The former president is being held in a national police facility in Brasilia and will experience a custody hearing on the following day.
Latest Court Petitions
It was only on Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Supreme Court to authorize him to fulfill his full incarceration period under domestic detention, with electronic monitoring.
They also requested that the former president be allowed to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he demanded regular treatment for lung conditions and other ailments.
Details of Guilty Verdict
Bolsonaro was found guilty of heading a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the national vote to his left-wing rival, Lula.
High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a plot which involved plans to assassinate his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.
The plot was thwarted because it failed to get the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. The current president was inaugurated without issue on January 1st, 2023.
But a following week, on 8 January, numerous his followers attacked and damaged public facilities in the federal district, the capital city.
The law enforcement took action and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.
The judges found that the protesters had been encouraged by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the country's army to take action, bring back stability and return him to office.
At the time, the legal team called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.
He was also prohibited from running for public office until twenty-sixty - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.
The former president called the legal proceedings a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him running in the 2026 presidential election.
